Derived in the Heian period from writing the man'yōgana kanji 衣 in the cursive sōsho style.

- The hiragana syllable え (e). Its equivalent in katakana is エ (e). It is the fourth syllable in the gojūon order; its position is あ行え段 (a-gyō e-dan, “row a, section e”).
