Etymology
Derived in the Heian period from writing the man'yōgana kanji 為 in the cursive sōsho style.

ゐ (romaji wi, alternative romaji i)
- (obsolete) The hiragana syllable ゐ (wi). Its equivalent in katakana is ヰ (wi). It is the forty-fifth syllable in the gojūon order; its position is わ行い段 (wa-gyō i-dan, “row wa, section i”).
Usage notes
This is a rarely used hiragana.
The following kanji once used this pronunciation, but this has been replaced by the pronunciation い (i).
