From Proto-Mon-Khmer *baan (“pedestal dish”), from Chinese 盤 (OC *baːn, “dish; tray”) (SV: bàn); cognate with Muong pàn (“table”), Khmer ពាន (piən, “pedestal dish”) and Mon ဗာန် (pàn, “pedestal dish”). The “game” sense is borrowed from Chinese directly; compare ván, a colloquial loan from the same Chinese source.
