From the language of the ancient state of Nanzhao, likely derived ultimately from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *k-la (“tiger”). Compare Southern Bai lod (“tiger”), jinl bol lod (“male tiger”), Sichuan Yi ꆿ (lat, “tiger”).
