  1. hear, listen
    私 (わたし)はどこかでオオカミが吠 (ほ)えるのを聞 (き)いた。
    Watashi wa dokoka de ōkami ga hoeru no o kiita.
    I heard wolves barking somewhere.
    私 (わたし)はその曲 (きょく)をラジオで聞 (き)いた。
    Watashi wa sono kyoku o rajio de kiita.
    I listened to that song on the radio.
  2. to ask a question
    道 (みち)に迷 (まよ)った彼 (かれ)は、私 (わたし)に聞 (き)いた。
    Michi ni mayotta kare wa, watashi ni kiita.
    Since he was lost he asked me the way.
  3. to smell, sniff
    香 (こう)を聞 (き)く。
    Kō o kiku.
    Smell the incense.
