From elision of 按生 (àn-siⁿ, àn-seⁿ, “this manner”). Compare with Hakka 恁樣／恁样 (án-ngiòng).

Usage notes

When used as an adverb, Min Nan 按呢 corresponds to Mandarin 這麼／这么 (zhème, “in this way”), but more in the sense of Mandarin 如此 (rúcǐ, “like this”). As such, Min Nan 按呢 can be placed at the end of a phrase, as can Mandarin 如此, whereas Mandarin 這麼／这么 must be followed by an adjective or verb.
