From Middle Dutch vore, vor, voor, from Old Dutch fora, fore, from Proto-Germanic *furai. There were originally two distinct Germanic forms, *furai and *furi, which functionally merged in most languages, including Dutch. The form derived from the former became standard in Dutch, while the latter survives as the dialectal form veur.
