An Indo-European loanword from either Baltic or Germanic, compare eg. Lithuanian plautas (“shelf”), Old Norse flauta (“crossbeam in sleigh”). The word has also been loaned to the other Baltic-Finnic languages, e.g. Estonian laud (“table”), as well as the Samic languages, e.g. Skolt Sami lu´vdd (“plank; float for seine”)
