From earlier luitin, a variation (with change of suffix) of luiton, itself an alteration (probably after Old French luitier (“to fight”)) of nuiton, which itself was an alteration (after nuit (“night”)) of netun, from Latin Neptunus (“Neptune”). Doublet of Neptune.
