Etymology

From Late Latin lanceāre, present active infinitive of lanceō, from Latin lancea, of Celtiberian origin. Compare Catalan llançar, Asturian llanzar, French lancer, Italian lanciare, Occitan and Portuguese lançar. Doublet of lancear, a later borrowing.
