えん
Grade: 1
on’yomi

/wen//eɴ/

From Middle Chinese (MC ziuᴇn, ɦˠiuᴇn), with the original sense of "circle, roundness".

The yen became the official currency of Japan in 1871, succeeding the (ryō) and the (mon).
