Etymology 1
Borrowed from Old Khmer tanmer (“hike, march; journey or travel on foot”), an extended form of ter (“to go on foot; to march; to walk; etc”), from which Thai เดิน (dəən) was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer ដំណើរ (dɑmnaə).
Noun
ดำเนิน • (dam-nəən)
Usage notes
- The royal noun can be made a royal verb by adding the royal auxiliary verb ทรง (song) before it. For example, ทรงพระดำเนิน (song prá-dam-nəən) means "to walk" (used of a royal person).
- Despite this royal noun originally meaning "walking", the royal verb เสด็จพระราชดำเนิน (sà-dèt-prá-râat-chá-dam-nəən) means "to go, move, or travel (by whatever means)".
Verb
ดำเนิน • (dam-nəən) (abstract noun การดำเนิน)
- (elegant) to walk; to step; to go or move on or as if on foot.
- (formal) to carry out; to carry on; to conduct; to execute; to perform.
