From Japanese 禅 (zen), from Middle Chinese 禪 (MC d͡ʑiᴇn) (compare Mandarin 禅 (Chán), an abbreviation of 禪那 (MC d͡ʑiᴇn nɑ), from Sanskrit ध्यान (dhyāna, “a type of meditation”). Akin to dhyana.
