From Middle English yvory, ivorie, from Anglo-Norman ivurie, from Latin eboreus (“in or of ivory”) adjective of ebur (“ivory”) (genitive eboris), from Coptic ⲓⲏⲃ (iēb, “Elephantine, (unattested) *ivory”) or its ancestor Egyptian ꜣbw (“elephant, ivory, Elephantine”).
