Etymology

From Old Japanese, first attested in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE).

Originally a compound of (hito, man, person) + (to, combining particle) + なり (nari), the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of verb なる (naru, to become). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

The kanji spelling is jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese 為人.
