Etymology

From Proto-Tai *haɰᶜ (“to give”), from Middle Chinese 許 (MC hɨʌ^X, “to allow”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩨ᩶, Lao ໃຫ້ (hai), Lü ᦠᦹᧉ (ḣue²), Tai Dam ꪻꪬ꫁, Shan ႁႂ်ႈ (hāue), Ahom 𑜑𑜧 (haw), Zhuang hawj.
