Etymology

Borrowed from Pali mālā (“flower; garland; series; etc”) or Sanskrit माला (mālā, “garland; necklace; row; crown; etc”). Cognate with Old Khmer mālā, malā (“wreath, garland; slavename”); Modern Khmer មាលា (miəliə).
