Partially from a dialectal form of down; and partially from Old French dune, from Middle Dutch dūne (Dutch duin) or Middle Low German dune; all possibly from Gaulish dunum (“hill”), from Proto-Celtic *dūnom (“stronghold, rampart”). Compare English down.
