Etymology
From Middle English Wales, from Old English Wēalas, plural of wealh (“foreigner, Welshman”), from Proto-Germanic *walhaz (“foreigner”), probably from Latin Volcae, the name of a Celtic tribe in Gaul. Compare the second element in Cornwall, and also Gaul.
