English

Etymology 1

From French Maine, named after the Maine River, from the name of the Gaulish tribe the aulerci cenomanni, who inhabited a territory centered around its capital city of Vindinon (white place), today le Mans (a corruption of Cenomannis to *Celmans to Le Mans).

Cenomanni's name is a corruption of Cenimagni[1], another Celtic tribe whose name is from Iceni + Latin magni (great).[2]
