Etymology
/ipa yu ru/ → /ifayuru/ → /iwayuru/
Originally a compound of Old Japanese 言は (ipa), the 未然形 (mizenkei, imperfective form) of verb 言ふ (ipu), modern 言う (iu, “to say”) iwa + ゆ (-yu, grammatical suffix) + る (-ru, attributive suffix). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
The kanji spelling is jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese 所謂.
