From Old Khmer phnūsa, phnūssa, phnwsa, Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer pnos, or Angkorian Old Khmer phnvas, phnos, pnos (to be in holy orders; holy orders), extended forms of pūs, from which Thai บวช (bùuat) was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer ផ្នួស (phnuəh).
