Etymology
From Old Khmer phnūsa, phnūssa, phnwsa, Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer pnos, or Angkorian Old Khmer phnvas, phnos, pnos (“to be in holy orders; holy orders”), extended forms of pūs, from which Thai บวช (bùuat) was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer ផ្នួស (phnuəh).
