Etymology
Originally a causative form of zīst (“to suckle”), like its rarer but more regularly formed synonym zīdināt.[1]

zīdīt tr., 3rd conj., pres. zīdu, zīdi, zīda, past zīdīju
- to nurse, to breastfeed (to feed (a child, a baby) with one's own milk)
- viņai bija pilnas, piebriedušas krūtis, jo tā zīdīja bērnu ― she had full, swollen breasts, because she was nursing a child
- to nurse, to suckle (the same, for animals)
- cūka bija paēdusi un zīdīja sivēnus ― the sow had eaten and was (now) nursing (her) piglets
