From Proto-Vietic *k-vaɲ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kwaɲ ~ *kwaaɲʔ (“gibbon”), cognate with Proto-Bahnaric *kwaɲ (“ape, gibbon”) (whence Halang kơwĕng).
