- Any of the genus Unio of freshwater mussels.

From ūnus (“one”) + -iō. The 'onion' sense may however be for *usniō, continuing a Proto-Indo-European *wósHr̥- ~ *usHen- (“garlic, onion”) seen also in Hittite 𒉿𒀸𒄩𒅈 (wašḫar, “garlic”), Sanskrit उष्ण (uṣṇa, “onion”), Pashto ووږه (wúģa, “garlic”), Khowar [script needed] (wǝẓnū, “garlic”)[1].
