From Middle French, from Old French terne (“dull, dim”), from *Frankish tarni (“hidden, obscure”), from Proto-Germanic *darnijaz (“concealed, masked, veiled”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰer- (“to hold, hold tight, support”).
