Etymology

First part (tänä) coming from tämä in essive case: tänä. For the 'ending' -än, there are multiple possible explanations: [1]

  • possible: tänä with instructive ending -in, found in some dialects, simplified to tänään.
  • most probably: from tänänä, from tänäpä, from tänäpänä, dialectal contraction of tänä päivänä. Cognates Karelian tänäpäi and Ludic tänäpäi; Veps t'äńämbäi; Votic / Votian tänäpõin; Estonian täna or tänäpä; and Livonian täm'põ. tänäpänä was first used in written Finnish by M. Agricola; afterwards used in written Finnish until the late 1800s.

Ultimately from Proto-Uralic *tä. Cognate to Udmurt туннэ (tunne, “today”), Udmurt туэ (tue, “now”).
