From dialectal manj, from Proto-Albanian *mazdnja, deverbative of Proto-Indo-European *mh₂sd- (compare English mast (“nuts (pig feed)”), Greek μαστός (mastós, “breast”)), from *meh₂d-;[1] alternatively from *mh₂dnyeti,[2] directly from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂d- (compare Latin madere (“to be wet”), Sanskrit मेदन (médana, “fattening”)).
