Uncertain. Often considered to be from Latin *marrucina or *marracina, ultimately from marra (“thorn”), but possibly also from an alteration of malitia with the influence of the suffix -ciune. Compare Spanish maleza. Compare also the related Albanian mërqinje, with the same meaning as the Romanian word.
