Etymology

Inherited from Latin -tiō, -tiōnem, and found mostly in certain older Romanian words and constructions (formed before the mid 19th century), and no longer productive. Most modern words or neologisms use the forms -ție or occasionally -țiune.

  1. (non-productive) roughly equivalent to -tion; was used to form a noun when added to a verb root, describing that action or state related to the verb (also used with adjective roots sometimes)

    a ruga → rugăciuneto ask for; to pray → prayer
