Etymology 1
From Proto-Finnic *lakci, a possible Baltic loan. -ht- in the nominative is by analogy with the oblique case forms; the expected form *laksi (compare the declension of kaksi) has fallen out of usage but survives in Swedish toponyms. Compare to a widespead South Ostrobothnian dialectal toponym lakso (“a small pool of water, a puddle”).
Cognates include Karelian laksi, Veps laht, Estonian laht, Votic lahti and Northern Sami luokta.[1]
