Like other interrogative and relative correlatives, kien can be combined with ajn, the adverbial particle of generality. Kien ajn thus means "(to) wherever" or "whitherever".

When used as an independent verb, the imperfect form of kien has the sense of the future: Inkun miljunarju. – “I will be a millionaire.” The present tense is expressed by the subject pronouns without a verb: Jien miljunarju. – “I am a millionaire.”
As a subordinate verb, the imperfect of kien is used in the normal fashion: Irrid inkun miljunarju. – “I want to be a millionaire.” The same is true of the perfect: Kont miljunarju. — “I was a millionaire.”
