From Middle French blé, from Old French blet (“cereal, grain”) (compare Medieval Latin blādum), from Frankish *blād (“field produce”), from Proto-Germanic *blēdaz, *blēdō (“flower, leaf”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₃- (“to bloom, flower”). Compare Catalan blat, compare also English blade.
