From Proto-Balto-Slavic *bárˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰorH-.[1] Cognate to Russian боро́ть (borótʹ, “to overpower”), боро́ться (borótʹsja, “to fight”), Latin ferīre (“to hit”).[1]
