From Old Norse bót, from Proto-Germanic *bōtō (“recompense”). Cognates include Old Swedish bōt (“improvement”) whence Swedish bot (“fine”). Compare also Bót- in the names Bótey, Bóthildur and Bótólfur, Swedish Boel and Bodil and Danish Bodil.
