From Old High German dah, from Proto-Germanic *þaką; compare German Low German Dack, Dutch dak, English thack, thatch, Danish tag. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *teg-, and akin to Latin toga (“garment”) and Ancient Greek στέγος (stégos, “roof”).
