Etymology

From Italian -eggiare, and probably intended to resemble -igi.[1]

Suffix

-iĝi

  1. to become
    ruĝa (“red”) + ‎-iĝi → ‎ruĝiĝi (“to blush”)
  2. to change in state
    stari (“to be standing”) + ‎-iĝi → ‎stariĝi (“to stand up”).
  3. makes intransitive verbs out of transitive ones
    komenci (“to begin”, transitive verb) + ‎-iĝi → ‎komenciĝi (“to begin”, intransitive verb)
    La spegulo rompiĝis. ― The mirror broke.
