Etymology 1
First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄇᆞᄅᆞᆷ (polom). Possibly from Old Chinese 風 (OC *plum, *plums, “wind”). Because consonant clusters are not allowed in Korean, a vowel is added according to the vowel harmony.[1]
