First attested in the Worin cheongangjigok (月印千江之曲 / 월인천강지곡), 1449, as Middle Korean 두루미 (twulwumi). Likely Altaic cognates include Proto-Turkic *durunja (“crane”) (whence Turkish turna), Japanese 鶴 (tsuru, “crane”), Mongolian тогоруу (togoruu, “crane”)). Compare also Hungarian daru (“crane”).
