Appears in Middle Chinese historical records, particularly in the 三国志 (Sangokushi, “Records of the Three Kingdoms”), as transliteration of Old Japanese 大和 (Yamato), itself of uncertain origin.
Usually pronounced with a plosive, as Yabatai.
