From Middle Chinese compound 要請 (ʔjiew tshjeng^X, literally “demand + request”). Compare modern Mandarin 要請／要请 (yāojí, “request; require”).

要請 (hiragana ようせい, rōmaji yōsei, historical hiragana えうせい)

要請する (transitive, hiragana ようせいする, rōmaji yōsei suru, historical hiragana えうせいする)

to request officially for something or to do something that has to be done
政 (せい)府 (ふ)は捕 (ほ)虜 (りょ)の解放 (かいほう)を要 (よう)請 (せい)した。
Seifu wa horyo no kaihō o yōsei shita.
The government called for / requested the release of the prisoners of war.
