Wasei kango (和製漢語), orthographically borrowed from Japanese 知事 (chiji, “governor”), which was in turn a semantic readaptation of Chinese 知事 (“sensible, wise”).

From obsolete Chinese 知府 (zhīfǔ, “governer or magistrate of a county or province”), which was often referred to as 知某州事 (one who knows matters concerning the county/province), which shortens to 知事.
