Compound of 番 (ban, “order, turn, place, rank”) +‎ 付け (tsuke, “attaching, sticking, applying”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 付ける tsukeru, “to stick something to something else, to apply something, to attach something”).[1][2]
