Etymology
Compound of 桜 (sakura, “cherry, cherry tree”) + 木 (ki, “tree”).[1][2][3] The ki changes to gi as an instance of rendaku (連濁). .
The term 桜 (sakura) on its own is ambiguous, and could be used to mean either the tree or the blossom. The addition of 木 (ki, “tree”) makes this distinction clear.
