From Proto-Tai *ʰluəŋᴬ (big). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩖ᩠ᩅᨦ, Lao ຫຼວງ (lūang), ᦷᦜᧂ (l̇ong), Shan လူင် (lǔung), Ahom 𑜎𑜤𑜂𑜫 (lung). Compare Khmer ហ្លួង (luəng).
