Borrowed from Sanskrit सम्पूरण (sampūraṇa, literally “filling the stomach”); perhaps via Old Khmer saṃpūrṇa, saṃpūrṇna, saṃmpūrṇna, sampūra, saṃpūṇna, saṃpur (“complete, full; abundant, plentiful; etc”); equal to Thai สม (sǒm) + บูรณ์. Cognate with Modern Khmer សម្បូណ៌, សម្បូរ (sɑmbou).
