From Proto-Indo-Aryan *suHnúṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *suHnúš (compare Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬥𐬎‎ (hunu)), from Proto-Indo-European *suHnús. Other cognates include Gothic 𐍃𐌿𐌽𐌿𐍃 (sunus), Lithuanian sūnùs, Old Church Slavonic сꙑнъ (synŭ) and Old English sunu (English son).
