Related to Middle Persian wn' (win), Sogdian [script needed] (wynʾ /wīnā/), Old Armenian վին (vin, “kind of plucked string instrument”) (an Iranian borrowing), and Khotanese [script needed] (bīna); descendants (via Pali) include Khmer ពិណ (pɨn), Thai พิณ (pin), and Lao ພິນ (phin).
