یار

Persian
Etymology
Contraction of Middle Persian (and archaic New Persian) یاور (yâvar), cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬁𐬬𐬀𐬭 (zāvar, “strength, power”) (persianized as زاور). According to Pokorny s.v. "ĝeu-" (i.e. "Proto-Indo-European *ǵewH-") from the root of Sanskrit जु (ju, “hurry on; hurry, be quick”), see also Avestan 𐬰𐬆𐬬𐬍𐬱𐬙𐬫𐬀 (zəvīštya, “the quickest”)), with an -ar- suffix. In this case, the Persian word would be root-cognate with زود (zud, “quick, rapid”).
