From Middle Persian *hmīr. Compare Kurdish hevîr / ههویر. Probably from Old Armenian խմոր (xmor), from Classical Syriac ܚܡܥ (ḥma, “to ferment, to become light by the action of leaven or yeast”). Also Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *smérus (“grease, fat”).
